A Cradle of the Conservation Movement
 
 
 
 

It was along the banks of the Wisconsin river that Aldo Leopold made many of the observations that led to his revolutionary concept: We ought to have ethics regarding the land. More than 50 years later, the "land ethic" continues to influence conservationists.

Wisconsin, too, is birthplace to Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day. Little wonder that the state's considered by many to be a cradle of conservation.

Apostle Islands Wilderness
The wild beauty of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore draws kayakers and others from around the world. Fully 94 percent of the park is eligible for wilderness protection.
