Congress took an important step in permanently protecting California's wild places with the introduction of the Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2003.

The U.S. Senate voted on March 19, 2003 in favor (52-48) of an amendment to strip from a pending budget resolution a provision that would have paved the way for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
